Better Life Center

The Better Life Center, located next door to our current facility in Midlothian, is another unique and innovative project for our practice.

Current national data shows that as many as 1 in 5 American children have a chronic and/or disabling condition. These children and their families may require more frequent and/or longer visits, a situation that often is not available in a typical pediatric practice. Utilizing the Medical Home Concept, the Providers at Pediatric & Adolescent Health Partners decided to implement this new way of caring for these patients by providing them with a free standing facility where all the needed services could be coordinated. This has resulted in better care, as well as more efficient care.

The Better Life Center creates an environment that allows us to better address our patients with special needs, asthma, ADHD, eating disorders and obesity. In addition, our other special programs, Yoga For Kids, Alternative Medical Care, Healthy Steps for Infants, Health & Fitness programs, as well as Infant Massage are housed in this facility.

The BLC is our means to go beyond the current standards for medical care and lead the efforts of our community to improve the health of children by utilizing public and private resources. We hope to collaborate with any and all organizations and individuals interested in working with us toward our goal.

Educational Issues

Several of our providers have a special interest and experience with many types of educational issues. We provide care for children with a variety of difficulties, such as ADHD, autism, behavioral, developmental and learning issues. We are also able to review outside educational and psychological testing of our patients. We are able to provide advice and assistance for many concerns, such as the need for special educational services, educational rights and intervention plans. If needed, we can participate in school meetings or otherwise assist families to help ensure that each child can make educational progress.

Healthy Steps Program

Healthy StepsThe Healthy Steps Program offered by PAHP is supported by the County of Chesterfield, Mental Health Services Division. Another unique program offered to the families that have newborns, the program provides infants from birth to age 2 the services not only of a medical provider, but of a developmental specialist. Each well visit includes the normal medical evaluation and is then enhanced with a full developmental evaluation and consultation.

A very popular program, admission to this program is strictly by referral or by a random selection process.

Medical Home and Medical Home Plus

A Medical Home is a concept started and encouraged by the American Academy of Pediatrics but so far adopted by only a few practices. Medical Home is not only a place, the office where your provider practices, it is more importantly an attitude by which an entire office works together to identify, access, and coordinate the social, emotional, and medical needs of their patients. PAHP is fortunate to have the services of a free standing corporation, Medical Home Plus, a 5013 C non-profit organization, to facilitate and insure that PAHP consistently practices the concept of the Medical Home. Medical Home Plus is a leader in the United States in serving children and their families to help them achieve their maximum potential.

Rheumatology

It is very rare that you will find any specialist “embedded” within a pediatric practice. When the opportunity to enlist the services of a Rheumatologist within our practice presented itself, PAHP jumped at the opportunity. Dr. Harry Gewanter is a Board Certified Rheumatology who cares for children with all the conditions associated with joints, muscles, and bones. He also cares for chronic pain conditions and other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

Student and Resident Pediatric Training

Student and Resident Pediatric TrainingPAHP is proud through the efforts of Dr. Kellett and Dr. Kraft to provide hands on pediatric training to the students and residents in the Pediatric Training Program at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University.

This program provides all of our providers with the opportunity to teach and share in the training of the next generation of physicians and also the opportunity to keep their own professional skills at a very high level.

Integrative Medical Care

Developing the newest component of our patient care, Dr. Blakey has long been interested in the possibility that other forms of medicine and medical care could be effective. Using techniques Dr. Blakey and Dr. Gewanter have learned over the years, integrative medicine, a now well accepted adjunct to traditional medical care, is a part of our everyday medical and emotional patient care.

Children with Special Health Care Needs

Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs have often not had their health care needs adequately served or coordinated. Through implementing the Medical Home Concept, as well as collaborating with Medical Home Plus, Inc., PAHP wants to ensure this historical lack of care or coordination does not occur in our practice. Medical Home Plus, Inc., is able to link families with available resources and supports, and together we are able to educate and empower families so that they can better assist their child achieve all that is possible. The empowering result of knowing ones’ rights and how to access appropriate resources is immeasurable.

Preventive Services Programs

PAHP has teamed with the Chesterfield Mental Health Services Board to provide several services at our offices to our patients and their families. We offer a free consulting service for children who are having behavioral difficulties and their parents need extra help not in counseling, but in learning psychological parenting techniques to help a child grow emotionally. PAHP also offers several programs operated by the Mental Health Services Board to families such as a couples program, and programs for parents of children with ADHD.
